How Indian Influences Helped Create a Vibrant Australia

Did you know that more than 110,000 people born in India now call Australia home? With a vibrant culture influenced by traditional cuisine, spirituality, architecture and art, Indian born Australians have helped contribute to Australian diversity.

Today, thanks to increased immigration, an array of Indian traditions are now part of life for many of us. We have a growing love for Indian cuisine and can find its regional variations at our doorstep. We’re also exposed to the amazing world of yoga and meditation and of course, we find common ground in our love (and friendly rivalry) of cricket.

40% of the Indian born population in Australia lives in Victoria and in Melbourne alone, Indian festivals like Holi Fest, Diwali Indian Festival of Light and India Day are celebrated annually.

Yet, until now, a dedicated ‘hub’ for Indian culture has been missing in Victoria. Having a similar concept to China Town to embrace India would enable a platform to showcase Indian influences in Australia. Thankfully for Victoria, this is about to become a reality.

The release of the 2015-2016 Victorian Budget showed a strong focus on multiculturalism and embracing Australia’s diversity. It includes an investment of a much-welcomed $21 million over four years. From this sum, $500,000 will be dedicated to building an Indian Cultural Precinct.

We look forward to following future developments.
