How Translation and Community Testing Strengthens the Effectiveness of Content Messaging

Beyond Words: Translation with Impact

In a multicultural society, translations ensure information is accessible, accurate and meaningful. Beyond access, effective translation supports equity and credibility; ultimately increasing engagement and the likelihood that the information will be acted upon positively.

As reported in The Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) and the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia (FECCA), effective translation removes language barriers, while community testing ensures messages are clear, culturally relevant and understood as intended---minimising risk and maximising impact.

For culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, translation goes beyond language. When messages reflect lived experiences, they feel authentic and inspire understanding and action. Without these essential elements, messaging risks being disconnected from the target audience; ultimately limiting cultural relevance, credibility and overall impact.

Translation shaped by real communities: Australia's first testing panel

LOTE recognised the importance and value of translation and community testing well before it became an industry focus. We established Australia's first community testing panel to ensure multicultural communications were not only accurate, but effective to create real impact. By engaging our community to test the messaging before publishing, we were able to uncover insights traditional translation alone could not recognise.

Why does community testing matter?

Translation paired with community testing becomes a tool for connection, and offers valuable insights in how public messages are perceived in terms of cultural relevance.

Not only does adopting a user-centred approach bridge the gap between translation and impact, it shifts communication from simply targeting communities, to actively partnering with them. Thus, engaging community members early in the planning and design process helps organisations ensure content is culturally appropriate, clear and trusted before shared.

Community testing is essential as it helps identify potential gaps between cultural accuracy and authenticity. This process acknowledges that effective messaging is a partnership established in lived experience, rather than one-way communication.

The impact on outcomes

When translation and community testing is done successfully, the benefits go far beyond readability. Organisations therefore gain stronger engagement, increased trust, clearer comprehension, and higher uptake of services. Most importantly, communities feel truly seen, respected and included in the decision making process.

Ultimately, community testing leads to better access, safer decisions and heightened community confidence.
